Vision Intelligence and Axis work together to improve traffic safety
AI software on security cameras offers real-time data for analyzing traffic situations.
Mission
Traffic in the Netherlands presents various challenges. Thousands of people get stuck in traffic every day, nearly 150 motorists driving against the flow of traffic are reported every year, and roadworks that block the standard routes are frequent and frustrating. But what can be done to ensure that traffic keeps flowing smoothly and reduce the risk of accidents and hazardous traffic situations?
Solution
In response to that question, Vision Intelligence developed their Traffic Analytics solution. The artificial intelligence (AI) software designed by Vision Intelligence is installed on the security cameras supplied by Axis Communications, enabling real-time insights into various moving objects at street level. To deliver the solution to end users, Vision Intelligence also partnered with G4S – the system integrator bringing the solution to the client. The three partners share the same goal: ensuring effortless traffic management.
Result
Traffic Analytics achieves 95% accuracy, ensuring that no critical traffic events are overlooked, while minimizing irrelevant data. The Axis cameras have the processing power to analyze the data on the camera itself (‘on the edge’), so no information is lost due to compression or data transfer, and results are more reliable. This feature also saves on costs because it requires less bandwidth, data storage and server room.
By combining the AI software from the Traffic Analytics solution with the Axis security cameras, we can respond quickly and accurately to events in traffic.
Converting visual input into usable information
Vision Intelligence was founded in 2020 by Jeroen Quakernaat and Kees Schollaart, with the aim of making it possible for anyone to develop video analytics solutions based on AI. Relying on data obtained from video footage from Axis network cameras, the AI software can analyze images and convert them into usable information. Vision Intelligence has various video analytics solutions in its portfolio, including Traffic Analytics. This traffic management solution uses AI technology to analyze, predict and improve a wide range of traffic situations.

Accurate analysis of traffic situations
Traffic never stops, day or night, with cars, bicycles and pedestrians passing by 24/7. Monitoring these traffic flows requires a high standard of accuracy. Vision Intelligence enables very accurate analysis of traffic situations with its Traffic Analytics solution. The solution achieves 95% accuracy, ensuring that no critical events are overlooked, while minimizing irrelevant data. The AI model only detects ‘objects of interest’. Each and every location where Traffic Analytics is deployed is unique. That means that rollout is different at each location, since the intelligent software has to be able to respond appropriately to specific situations.
Preventing overflow traffic through residential neighborhoods
Traffic Analytics can be deployed in two ways. Based on objective data collection, the solution determines how busy an area is. This information can be used to schedule roadworks. For example, the AI solution calculates how much traffic needs to be rerouted, and whether alternative routes currently have less traffic. These factors can also contribute to preventing overflow traffic in residential neighborhoods. Second, Traffic Analytics compiles real-time information that can be used to detect wrong-way traffic, vehicle accidents, or developing or intensifying traffic congestion. Access to real-time data makes it possible to respond quickly to evolving situations, for example sending first responders to the scene in the event of an emergency.
Faster image processing
To ensure that the AI solution can respond appropriately to traffic events, it is essential that video footage can be processed quickly and is available in good quality. Axis Communications plays a key role here: the software designed by Vision Intelligence runs on the Axis security cameras and was developed via the AXIS Camera Application Platform (ACAP). Developers can use this open application platform to design solutions that can be downloaded onto a diverse array of Axis devices.
The Axis cameras have the processing power to analyze the data on the camera itself (‘on the edge’), so no information is lost due to compression or data transfer, and results are more reliable. This feature also saves on costs because it requires less bandwidth, data storage and server room. As a result, the Vision Intelligence software can keep running offline, without an active connection, so images can be processed even faster.
Productive partnership
“By combining the AI software from the Traffic Analytics solution with the Axis security cameras, we can respond quickly and accurately to events in traffic. We have been working with Axis and G4S for a number of years now, and are very satisfied with the partnership. Each partner complements the others very well, in terms of software, hardware and integration”, says Jeroen Quakernaat, co-founder of Vision Intelligence.
“Openness is embedded in the Axis DNA. The principle of our ACAP program is that we are giving smart and creative people the opportunity to develop applications that make the best use of our technology, offer value to customers, and allow the companies involved to grow their own business. Traffic Analytics by Vision Intelligence is a perfect example of how a close partnership between developer, integrator and manufacturer can lead to a creative, successful solution”, says Edwin Beerentemfel, Manager, Global Partners & End Customers Middle Europe at Axis.
