People counting and security at Samsung’s exhibition

At Designblok 2022, Samsung's exhibition was secured using Axis and NetRex products and solutions. The temporary surveillance system provided accurate counting of people and visitors and reliable security.

Securing Samsung’s exhibition

At the Designblok 2022 festival, Samsung Electronics relied on an elegant and cost-efficient Axis solution to protect its showcase. Designblok – Prague’s renowned international design festival – attracted thousands of visitors and showcased a wide portfolio of high-value technology.

The Festival of design traditionally takes place in the so-called brownfields. Little-used and almost abandoned historical buildings before reconstruction were utilized by Designblok 22 also at this year’s event. Samsung's exhibition took place in one of the former Gabriel Loci monastery rooms on Holečkova Street.

Creating a secure exhibition environment requires a thoughtful balance of surveillance. With the right combination of smart camera placement, temporary monitoring, and fast response procedures, event organizers can safeguard valuable assets while ensuring a positive experience for visitors.

With high-value mobile devices and robotic products on display, Samsung needed precise visitor counting and reliable event-wide security to minimize the risk of theft and keep the exhibition running smoothly.

People counting with camera analytics

According to the organizers of the exhibition, 34,000 people attended the event. One of the interests of Samsung was to track the number of visitors who visited their exposition called The World is Flex!

For this task, Axis partner and technology integrator NetRex provided a short-term rental and installation of two Axis dome cameras, mounted on the ceiling above both entrances. The cameras were equipped with a people counting application and connected to NetRex’s cloud-based platform.

This proven system, with an accuracy rate of 95–99%, outperforms solutions such as optical barriers and reliably detects both adults and children – even when they pass through together. By visualizing footfall over selected time periods, Samsung could more easily assess visitor behaviour and gain valuable insight into return on investment (ROI) of the exhibit.

Nearly 17,000 people visited the Samsung exhibit alone in five days, according to the data from the cameras and the people counting application. Samsung also received easy access to the cameras through web and mobile apps.

I think that for this type of exhibition, we found a fitting solution to precisely count visitors and at the same time protect the exhibited products and the robotic installation itself. The short-term rental of the Axis camera system allowed us to accurately calculate the return of the event and significantly increased its overall security.

Securing the equipment and exhibited products

The second major challenge in dealing with the event was security. With a focus on securing the equipment and exhibited products after the closing hours of the exhibition.

Ultimate security with motion detection

Although the building had its own security service, there were only two simple doors between the rooms that were identified as passable for possible intruders. To further secure the location, enhanced security was therefore provided by a flat-faced turret style camera from AXIS M31 Dome Camera Series.

With its 110° coverage, the camera captures everything essential. Additionally, its motion detection settings, which are particularly useful in low-light conditions, enable it to send notifications to the production team whenever motion is detected.

Enabling real-time communication

The NetRex mobile user-friendly app features a built-in audio system with Axis microphone and speaker, allowing team members to communicate internally as well as address possible unwanted individuals and intruders with real-time communication.

Fortunately, at the Designblok 22 exhibition, there was no need to use it in any critical situations.
However, the team actively used the feature for internal coordination, where it proved to be highly effective and was particularly well received as an added benefit.

Ease of removal – quick teardown

Another advantage was uncomplicated de-installation and quick teardown of the system. The full system was carried out without complications within two service hours. The entire NetRex system could also be integrated into the centralized security agency's security desk, but in this case, the organizers did not use such a solution.

Part of the solution by NetRex was also an LTE modem. Wi-Fi connectivity was used for the products on the exhibition and the computers for kinetic installation. Samsung used the internet access to demonstrate their products.

A secure exhibition with excellent outcomes

Axis products and solutions together with partner NetRex managed to secure the entire five-day event with exhibited premium brands of phones and other products. Compared to live security guards or other solutions, this was the best choice both financially and functionally.
