Intelligent monitoring for safer highway operations
Nova Rota do Oeste improved highway safety across 850 km using Axis intelligent video surveillance for road monitoring, incident detection, and real-time operational support.
Nova Rota do Oeste highway operations
Nova Rota do Oeste operates one of Brazil’s most important logistics corridors, connecting strategic agricultural regions to export routes through BR-163 and BR-364. The highway corridor plays a critical role in the transportation of commodities across Brazil, supporting logistics operations that connect the country to major export hubs.
With thousands of vehicles traveling daily across the route, maintaining operational continuity, traffic flow, and highway safety became essential for Nova Rota do Oeste. Their mission is centered on protecting drivers and ensuring that traffic moves efficiently across one of Brazil’s busiest transportation corridors.
The organization needed a reliable way to improve road monitoring, increase visibility across remote highway sections, and strengthen emergency response capabilities while maintaining safe and efficient operations for road users.
At the same time, Nova Rota do Oeste sought to modernize its operational approach by moving beyond isolated monitoring systems previously installed at selected service bases. Instead, it implemented a broader intelligent monitoring strategy capable of supporting operations across the entire highway operation.
Improving highway incident detection
Managing more than 850 kilometers of active highway created major operational challenges for Nova Rota do Oeste.
Reducing blind spots
One of the project’s main objectives was eliminating blind spots across the highway corridor. Contractual monitoring requirements demanded complete operational visibility along the route, with cameras positioned at intervals of approximately four kilometers.
Further, Nova Rota do Oeste needed to improve real-time visibility across remote highway stretches where incidents could quickly escalate into operational disruptions, traffic delays, or safety risks for drivers.
Maintaining traffic flow during deployment
Unlike traditional industrial sites, implementing infrastructure on a live highway required a more agile approach to navigate its dynamic and demanding landscape. Approximately 80,000 vehicles continued traveling daily throughout the installation process, requiring strict operational planning and advanced safety procedures.
Each installation point needed careful analysis of road geometry, curves, terrain conditions, power availability, and communication infrastructure. In some locations, the deployment required transformer-supported power systems, while in others solar-powered configurations were necessary.
Field teams also mapped vehicle positioning, equipment lifting procedures, and highway signaling requirements to ensure installation activities could be performed safely without interrupting traffic flow.
With the implementation of this solution, we have achieved 100% monitoring of the concession, eliminating blind spots and expanding our ability to track highway conditions in real time, which enhances road safety and operational management.
Intelligent road monitoring solution
To improve operational visibility and incident response capabilities, Nova Rota do Oeste has implemented a smart video surveillance solution featuring more than 500 cameras strategically deployed along the highway corridor. The cameras run AXIS Object Analytics to automatically detect, classify, and track vehicles and pedestrians, transforming visual data into proactive security intelligence. This analytical foundation provides the critical insights necessary to drive the highway’s real-time monitoring workflows, partner integrations, and specialized imaging requirements.
Real-time traffic monitoring
The deployment combined high-resolution PTZ cameras, panoramic monitoring capabilities, infrared visibility, and advanced video management software to support real-time traffic monitoring and rapid incident detection.
The cameras were positioned according to the operational needs of each section of the highway. Some locations required long-range monitoring and high-zoom capabilities to support detailed tracking of incidents and vehicle flow, while others required broader panoramic coverage for continuous visibility across critical areas.
Integrated partner support
AUSEC, a partner of Axis, was responsible for implementing the solution, including integration with the ISS monitoring platform used in Nova Rota do Oeste’s operations.
According to the teams involved in the project, the joint effort between the companies was one of the key factors in the implementation’s success. In addition to the technological delivery, the partnership included the development of operational and security strategies that helped improve the concessionaire’s monitoring model.
“The project transformed the highway’s monitoring capabilities, providing operators with greater visibility and a more agile response in critical areas. This integration strengthens operational safety and enhances the efficiency of infrastructure management,” says Wagner Figueiredo, CEO of AUSEC.
Advanced image technologies
The solution also incorporated advanced imaging technologies designed to improve visibility under challenging environmental conditions.
Wide dynamic range (WDR) improved image clarity in areas with strong sunlight, intense shadows, or vehicle headlights, while infrared capabilities supported reliable monitoring during nighttime operations and in low-light environments.
In practical terms, these technologies improved the visibility of areas previously considered difficult to monitor while also supporting better tracking of moving vehicles and faster identification of incidents along the highway.
Nova Rota do Oeste’s mission is to save lives. We now expect these cameras to immediately identify any incident on the highway, allowing our team to quickly mobilize the necessary resources to provide assistance.
Faster response and safer highways
The intelligent monitoring solution significantly improved operational efficiency and highway safety for Nova Rota do Oeste.
Faster incident response
Teams can now quickly identify stopped vehicles, accidents, and unusual events, enabling faster dispatch of emergency response resources.
The expectation is that incidents can now be identified immediately, allowing operational teams to activate the appropriate response resources more efficiently and improve support for drivers traveling along the corridor.
Improved monitoring reliability
Enhanced image quality under difficult lighting and weather conditions improved monitoring reliability during both daytime and nighttime operations.
The project also represented an important transition from analog monitoring processes to a more intelligent digital operation designed to support AI-driven monitoring capabilities and more proactive highway management.
“Nova Rota do Oeste’s mission is to save lives. We now expect these cameras to immediately identify any incident on the highway, allowing our team to quickly mobilize the necessary resources to provide assistance,” said Wilson Ferreira, Director of Operations and Technology – Nova Rota do Oeste.
Reliable technology for long distances
In addition to improving highway safety, the deployment also delivered operational and infrastructure benefits that support long-term efficiency.
Operational scalability
The implementation of Axis Zipstream technology played a key role in optimizing bandwidth and significantly reducing storage consumption across the highway corridor. By maintaining high image quality while lowering network load, the technology improved operational scalability and recording retention efficiency, ensuring reliable performance even in remote highway environments.
Reduced maintenance demands
The quality, reliability, and durability of the monitoring equipment helped reduce the need for maintenance interventions and field replacements across remote areas of the highway.
For a large-scale operation distributed across hundreds of kilometers, reducing maintenance demands contributed directly to lower operational complexity and long-term resource optimization.
Long-term partnership value
The reliability of the technology and the collaborative approach between Nova Rota do Oeste and its Axis partners supported the long-term success of the deployment.
Project stakeholders described the relationship as a strategic partnership focused not only on technology deployment, but also on developing operational solutions capable of addressing evolving highway monitoring challenges.
Building safer highway operations
With intelligent video surveillance and real-time road monitoring, Nova Rota do Oeste strengthened its ability to protect drivers, improve operational efficiency, and support safer transportation infrastructure across one of Brazil’s most strategic highway corridors.
“With the implementation of this solution, we have achieved 100% monitoring of the concession, eliminating blind spots and expanding our ability to track highway conditions in real time, which enhances road safety and operational management,” says Rennan Duarte, Maintenance and Technology Manager at Nova Rota do Oeste.
The project established a scalable digital monitoring foundation capable of supporting future operational demands while improving the quality and precision of highway monitoring services delivered to road users.
Although no expansion plans have been formally announced, Nova Rota do Oeste stated that future opportunities may continue to include Axis solutions because of their reliability, operational performance, and alignment with their monitoring requirements.
