Safety without environmental impact
Ferroport invested in Axis technology to allow them to capture images in total darkness, addressing concerns about light pollution around the port of Açu.The move reduced their environmental impact and has led to a return of endangered species.
Safety with sustainability
Ferroport operates the iron ore port terminal at the Port of Açu. They prioritize operational efficiency while maintaining safety and sustainability for their employees, local community, and the environment. Their commitment to environmental stewardship has led to notable achievements, including planting more than 66,000 trees in the surrounding area within six months and protecting more than 1.3 million loggerhead sea turtle hatchlings since 2008.
Ferroport prioritizes security, leveraging cutting-edge technology and innovative solutions to protect its assets. A network of 206 cameras safeguards its offshore, operational, and perimeter areas against unauthorized vessel access. Although the system performed well during daylight hours, nighttime surveillance presented a challenge due to the absence of natural light. Aware of the potential environmental impact of artificial lighting, Ferroport sought a solution that would enable high-quality image capture in complete darkness, minimizing harm to local ecosystems while maintaining robust security measures.
Digital Tecnologia e Segurança by Emive&Co worked closely with Ferroport to understand their unique security needs and come up with a plan. “Our goal was to find a balance between security, compliance, and environmental responsibility," says Igor Facella, the company’s Commercial Director. "The resulting system delivers on all fronts, including exceptional image quality – even in complete darkness.”
"We started looking for cameras that could do the job without artificial lighting and Digital Tecnologia e Segurança by Emive&Co found Axis. We visited the Axis Experience Center in São Paulo to see the models that work in complete darkness. Initially we decided to buy 20 cameras with Axis Lightfinder technology, but little by little we have acquired more," said Marcelo Oliveira, Property Security Coordinator for Ferroport.

Following the installation of the new system, Ferroport's security team was able to turn off the floodlights that were operating at night to monitor the perimeter. They were delighted to discover that the new IP cameras captured images of a new visitor returning to its habitat: the maned wolf. Subsequently, other species began to return to the area such as anteaters, porcupines and capybaras.
"Regardless of whether we are in a natural environment with no artificial lighting, Axis cameras deliver clear, colorful images without adversely affecting wildlife. In fact, this week we saw that the cameras recorded a maned wolf passing close to the fence without being affected or scared off. It's great to think that technology can help in this regard," stresses Oliveira
To balance wildlife conservation with stringent security requirements, technology played a crucial role. Specifically, Ferroport had to meet the standards set by the ISPS Code (Resolution 53 Conportos) and Ordinance 143 of the Federal Revenue Service, which mandates 24/7 video surveillance for Brazilian port terminals, including license plate reading, 4 MP image quality and 180 days of storage. To achieve this, the project utilized fixed bullet cameras with HDTV 1080p resolution and Axis Lightfinder 2.0 which enables detailed color imaging in low-light conditions without relying on external light sources.
The demand for Axis cameras arose from our concern for the environment after researching the damage that artificial lighting causes to the ecosystem. In the region we have capybaras, porcupines, southern tamandua and maned woves. All endangered animals. By installing Axis cameras, we have achieved a high level of security and have registered a greater movement of these species in the area, which is the greatest proof of the success of our investment.
Innovation in action
Whether for security or sustainability, one thing is certain: innovation plays the leading role in Ferroport's projects. Focusing on the potential to enhance operational efficiency and ensure maximum levels of protection, the company installed AXIS Perimeter Defender for intelligent surveillance of demarcated areas. Deep learning analytics for perimeter detection are used to prevent unauthorized entry by land and sea, as well as in the offshore area to identify unauthorized approaching vessels.
"AXIS Perimeter Defender immediately activates our network strobe deter to warn potential intruders using light and sound. For the offshore area, we have also installed six PTZ cameras with 31x optical zoom for navigation security. The images are available to VTS Açu, the sector responsible for monitoring navigation security throughout the port," says Marcelo Oliveira.
Today, Ferroport is an example of a company that manages to extract maximum efficiency without sacrificing solid values such as safety and sustainability. In full compliance with the with the regulations of the Federal Revenue Service and CONPORTOS, the company continues to implement improvements that can serve as a guide for other port security projects, such as the acquisition of radars connected to Axis cameras to improve surveillance of offshore areas.
