Multisensor cameras for reliable, sustainable parcel delivery

Organization: DPD Hungary
Location: Budapest, Hungary
Customer need: Process monitoring, Access management, Perimeter and area security, Health, safety and environment (HSE)
Budapest, Hungary,

At its Budapest distribution hub, DPD Hungary uses Axis multisensor cameras to track parcels, enhance access control, strengthen facility protection, and support sustainability goals. The energy-efficient system ensures reliable, safe operations and is being rolled out across Hungary for smarter delivery.

Full control at the automated distribution hub

DPD Hungary is part of Geopost, Europe's largest parcel delivery network, that delivers 8 million parcels a day worldwide, on average.

With the extremely rapid growth of the regional market, the Hungarian subsidiary is also playing an increasingly important role in transit traffic, which is why it doubled its parcel sorting capacity in 2020 with a new hub.

In line with the international CSR program of the parent company, it continuously strives to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions and took maximum account of environmental considerations during the implementation of this greenfield project as well.

The 5.6-hectare distribution hub's 6,300-square-metre hall with 58 docking gates is equipped with an energy-saving parcel sorting system. The fully automated 2.5 m/s conveyor system safely handles more than 11,000 parcels per hour.

Thanks to the special sorting process, the parcels travel under control throughout the conveyor system and are transported to the correct loading gate without damage by transverse movement.

"For our state-of-the-art sorting system, we were looking for a camera system that could track and archive the footage to document the journey of each parcel," says Dr. Gergő Soltész, Compliance & HSSE Director at DPD Hungary, Ltd. "It is equally important to us that the camera system can be operated economically, reliably, safely and sustainably in the long term, and that it can be integrated with access and communication, facility security and occupational safety systems."

Axis cameras tick all the boxes

DPD Hungary awarded the contract for the installation of the cameras and security technology for the IT system to manage the new distribution hub to Tavacom, a Budapest-based company which won the tender with a system design based on Axis cameras.

Tavacom has installed over 150 cameras from various Axis product lines during the project. Axis outdoor, IP-protected, vandal-resistant bullet cameras monitor the path of parcels, transmitting high-resolution, image-refreshed, detailed footage with barcode readability.

Axis cameras meet all the requirements of DPD Hungary, which places a high priority on both cutting-edge technology and sustainability. They serve a wide range of business needs not only with their excellent image quality, but also with their reliable, safe and energy-efficient operation.

Mulitsensor cameras

Multisensor cameras provide an overview of the interior and exterior of the sorting hall and dock gates for logistics process management and shell protection. Wide area coverage of multisensor cameras eliminate blind spots thanks to high pixel density combined with high quality images seamlessly stitched together

Fisheye cameras help to monitor access areas with lower ceilings, while the entrances are equipped with the Axis network intercom solutions.

With Axis Zipstream technology the cameras transmit video in compressed form, so they can meet demand with significantly less storage capacity and network bandwidth. Low-power and highly energy-efficient, they can be operated from PoE switches, meaning that no separate power supply is required for a single camera, even for models with IR technology.

They also have the added benefit of being remotely and centrally managed and covered by the five-year warranty, while the licensing of the Milestone CMS software, which also provide benefit of management the multisensor cameras as a single device, resulting in financial savings and sustainability.

Closely watched processes, high quality services

Axis Site Designer 3D software has made design much easier. This allowed DPD Hungary to cover the vast spaces of the distribution hub with as few cameras as possible, while optimizing storage capacity and bandwidth to meet quality, availability and sustainability requirements.

"We used Axis Site Designer 3D to plan the camera placement in great detail so that we could include them in the tender together with brackets, recessed frames and other accessories," says Zoltán Nagy. "Based on these plans the cameras were installed quickly and seamlessly, they are performing exactly as expected, and have been functioning without failure since the start of live operation."

Two multisensor cameras, with a 180-degree angle of view, mounted on the ceiling brackets in a distribution center

For example, two multisensor cameras, each with a 180-degree angle of view, can be mounted on the ceiling brackets chosen for the overview cameras, and a total of eight sensors provide a 360-degree view of the hall's interior.

Axis cameras provide advanced analytical capabilities to detect a variety of events, and by analyzing their images, DPD Hungary can quickly answer questions, for example, about the parcel route.

The cameras can also send an alarm when e.g. a line is crossed or in the event of strong vibrations, thus helping to ensure compliance with occupational safety rules. And they make access more secure – and more convenient for employees – by communicating with the VoIP (SIP) phones installed in the reception area.

Axis cameras serve our business needs, including the implementation of our sustainability strategy, with high reliability, no failures, optimal use of resources, high energy efficiency and long term reliability, as guaranteed by the vendor.

Bringing the smart solution to every site

As an indication of DPD Hungary's satisfaction with the systems in place, since the handover of the Budapest distribution center in 2020, the company has extended the proven solution to its other sites countrywide, installing an average of 8-10 cameras per site.

In 2022 the parcel delivery company also opened its largest depot in Hungary, next to its distribution center, where Tavacom has installed 145 additional Axis cameras.

"As the parcel delivery market evolves dynamically, our distribution centers and depots are experiencing rapid growth in traffic and need exactly such solutions to operate competitively and sustainably." says Dr. Gergő Soltész.
