Technology and healthcare

A.C. Camargo Cancer Center, founded in 1953, is a leading oncology treatment center in Brazil noted for its history of innovation and excellence. Attending to around 100,000 patients annually, the institution handles all types of cancer, including the rarest ones. The facility is a national pioneer in implementing the Cancer Center model, an approach that offers comprehensive care, including prevention, diagnosis of suspicious cases, hospitalization, treatment, rehabilitation, and palliative care.

When William de Souza, Corporate Manager at A.C. Camargo Cancer Center, joined the team, he noticed that the video surveillance and security center was not up to par with the high technological standards of the seven buildings that make up the Cancer Center. With the support of the institution's board of directors, he carried out a complete replacement of the video cameras and software.

A transformation of this magnitude required organization and in-depth analysis to support decision-making. Therefore, Souza conducted tests for a year with eight different hardware and software platforms, and the results showed that the best option for the Center was the Axis solution, as it met all security and information protocols.

Safety with sensibility

The first core value of A.C. Camargo Cancer Center is respect for life, which is closely linked to security and technology. Souza explains that IP cameras equipped with video analytics go beyond asset security and are used with sensitivity to care for patients, their families, and the nearly six thousand staff members who pass through the complex daily. In addition to optimizing the network infrastructure, the system now consolidates multiple connections into a single access point, previously handling up to 13 separate locations, while also reducing storage requirements.

A.C. Camargo is one of the largest institutions world-wide and a leading provider in South America for cancer treatment and research. “Here, we treat patients of all ages, from babies to the elderly, with nearly 15,000 people passing through the entrances daily. Technology helps us remain vigilant to provide the best care. We have cameras monitoring areas such as linen and hospitality, along with analytics that detect falls, suspicious behavior, and even assist in identifying and preventing situations where individuals, in moments of distress, might harm themselves or attempt suicide," Souza explains.

Patient care is not limited to the operating rooms or patient rooms. The cameras are distributed throughout all areas, such as cafeterias and parking lots, to track the patient throughout their journey at A.C. Camargo. "It is essential to have great sensitivity because, often, patients who have undergone chemotherapy or radiotherapy may feel unwell after being discharged. These cameras are responsible for detecting any issues and alerting our team to provide medical or specialized care in case of an emergency," highlights Souza.

Before making a decision, we conducted a bench test for nearly a year with eight hardware and software platforms. Axis was chosen for being the most secure hardware in terms of patient care and prevention protocols. We started with 300 cameras and quickly noticed the difference. Today, we have over 2,000 active devices across seven units. In the first two years, the return on investment resulted in savings of 11.8 million BRL (equivalent to $2.36 million USD).

Investments with value

A.C. Camargo Cancer Center has strategically implemented technology to ensure both excellence in care and budget efficiency. One of the most notable examples is the use of security cameras and monitoring systems in critical areas, such as operating rooms and delicate procedure rooms, like cellular medicine and pathology. These technologies have not only increased the safety of patients and professionals but also helped identify and correct operational flaws, preventing incidents and improving the quality of service.

Axis solutions have also significantly enhanced safety and operational efficiency in critical hospital environments. By implementing cameras such as the AXIS M30 and M31 Dome Camera Series in key departments like Cellular Therapy, Linear Accelerator, and the pharmacy, the hospital has improved its ability to detect risks in real-time.

AXIS M30 Dome Camera Series helps staff identify nitrogen leaks through luminous alerts, allowing the Monitoring Center to take immediate action. Meanwhile, the AXIS M31 Dome Camera Series camera plays a crucial role in cancer treatment, enabling medical staff to remotely monitor patients and even detect vital signs. Additionally, these cameras assist in identifying power outages, water leaks, and refrigerator malfunctions, preventing potential medication losses and optimizing maintenance efforts.

Intercom at hospital

Beyond patient treatment areas, Axis solutions have transformed operational processes within the hospital. The Axis network video intercom, installed in elevators, has optimized patient transportation. The network video intercom enables real-time communication between staff and the Monitoring Center, providing a swift response if emergencies occur during transport. Similarly, AXIS Q92 corner-mount camera deployed in surgical centers enhances patient safety by providing continuous monitoring while maintaining strict compliance with privacy regulations. This comprehensive video surveillance infrastructure has not only strengthened security and efficiency but also set a benchmark for other healthcare institutions looking to modernize their operations.

Today, the Cancer Center ensures compliance with both international and national certifications through comprehensive auditing of its processes, establishing itself as a leading reference in cancer treatment. The implementation of these cameras was essential to ensure greater reliability in the processes, resulting in a significant improvement in security and the daily management of over 300 thousand vehicles that pass through the institution each year. Thanks to the IP cameras with license plate recognition, vehicles attributed to doctors are permitted to enter automatically. Additionally, all vehicles and personal belongings are more secure. Thus, instead of generating losses, these systems now contribute to a more efficient operation, generating additional savings for the institution.

"The previous management model in the parking lots resulted in losses of approximately 1.1 million USD, but with the new cameras, we now save 400 thousand USD per year,” says Souza highlighting the importance of investment in technology for the institution’s financial sustainability. “In 5 years, over $3.9 million USD have been invested, generating a return of $2.36 million USD, which is allocated to improvements for patient care."

Today, A.C. Camargo has a robust, well-structured security system that is 100% Axis technology. "The implementation started with 300 cameras, and we quickly noticed the difference. Now we have 2,100 cameras and have just closed a new project to add 900 more units. Soon, we will have 3 thousand," adds Souza.
