Edge storage is a technology used in Axis network cameras and video encoders that enables video recording directly to an onboard SD™ card or a network-attached storage (NAS) device. Edge storage makes it possible to design flexible and reliable recording solutions, optimize bandwidth usage, and lower the cost and effort for remote site recording.
It offers an affordable remote site recording solution wherever bandwidth is limited or absent. High quality images are stored on the camera SD card, replacing the need for an onsite server.
Redundancy with fail-over recording
Edge storage offers fail-over recording, meaning that images can be temporarily stored on the SD card on board the camera in case of network failure.
When the network connection is restored and the system returns to normal operation, the central VMS can retrieve and merge local video recordings seamlessly. This ensures that the user gets uninterrupted video recordings and provides increased system reliability and safeguards system operation.
Typical applications are mission critical installations, but also for video surveillance where network coverage is limited or intermittent.
Edge storage allows for bandwidth optimization in applications where bandwidth is limited. The user or an operator can view live video in in low resolution, while recording HDTV quality images locally on the camera.
Upon an incident, the high quality video stream from the camera will be stored on the SD card of the camera, which is then retrieved by the central VMS for efficient forensic search.
Typical applications are when using mobile viewing apps, but also in large scale systems such as city surveillance.
How much storage do I need?
The retention time of the card depends on how the cameras are configured to record at different frame rates and resolutions, depending on motion detection, alarm events and hours of the day. As use case we provide two predefined scenarios with a 1080p HDTV camera with medium level of Zipstream provided from AXIS Site Designer for comparison:
12 hours day time operations with recording triggered by motion detection. An environment with medium motion and smaller number of people passing daily compared to the retail environment. There will be few recordings at nighttime, due to the reduced movement.
