Reflections on a visit to UITP Global Public Transport Summit 2023

My colleagues and I recently visited UITP Global Public Transport Summit in Barcelona, the definitive event for the public transport sector globally. As the world’s biggest event dedicated to sustainable mobility, the summit brings together all transport modes, public transport authorities, and operators.

This year’s event was the 64th edition of the UITP Global Public Transport Summit and enjoyed record numbers: 87 sessions featuring 423 speakers, 337 exhibitors from 41 countries, and over 17,000 exhibition visitors. It truly is the place where the global public transport congregates, and provides an ideal insight into the priorities and trends across the sector.

With the increasing demand we see for video analytics in in the public transport industry, my colleagues and I were keen to gather insights into the latest technologies and solutions shaping the future of mobility. Through great conversations with customers and partners from all over the world we heard about some of the most important challenges and needs that they’re focused on today.

Sustainability a priority, along with the challenges of digitalization

An overall trend in the public transport sector is a focus on sustainability, emission reduction, and electric buses creating a cleaner environment and generating less noise. Alongside this, we heard about the infrastructure challenges that come with an increased number of electric vehicles, notably in the need for regular charging. We also saw a greater presence of autonomous vehicles at the event, and as a result of increased digitalization, there was a heightened focus on cybersecurity.

Collecting and using data in AI analytics

Another clear trend in the public transport industry is the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in analytics, and the ability to collect and analyze data from video and other sensors to generate actionable insights.

Analytics used in public transport are increasingly relying on surveillance cameras as key sensors. For example, analytics can enable public transport providers to estimate passenger, wheelchair, bicycle, and stroller occupancy at stations and onboard vehicles. Such insights can be used to better manage passenger boarding and plan service updates. The potential applications for analytics are almost endless.

Safety, efficiency, and passenger experience: Axis partners highlight the potential

We were delighted to see and meet so many Axis partners from across EMEA showcasing solutions for public transport based on our technology. Solutions on show not only highlighted how security and safety for passengers, staff, and assets can be ensured, but can also be used to improve operational efficiency and overall service delivery and passenger satisfaction.

Our colleague Jan Engelschalt, Segment Development Manager, Public Transport, took the opportunity to speak to partners using Axis technology at the event, and also to find out more about their latest solutions for the public transport industry. You can dig into some of the insights in the videos below.

We’re already looking forward to future UITP Global Public Transport Summits!
