AV1 codec
Axis pioneers AV1 support in network video with our latest ARTPEC-9 system-on-chip (SoC) offering low-bitrate, high-quality streaming, rich client support, and easy integration.
What is AV1 codec?
AV1 is a modern video encoding standard, optimized for video transmission over the internet. Developed by Google, it was standardized by the Alliance for Open Media—a consortium founded by Google, Intel, Amazon, Nvidia, Netflix, and others—to create the next generation of video communication technology.
This standard is designed to provide the same high-quality video but at lower bitrates compared to existing codecs like H.264 and H.265, making it ideal for streaming and storage applications.

The benefits of AV1
AV1 efficiently handles all types of video and offers superior efficiency for video with high resolution and moving objects:
- Offers high-quality video at low bitrates, allowing for efficient network video transmission and reduced storage costs. Combine with Axis Zipstream for exceptional performance.
- Support for video wider than 8K, otherwise only possible with H.265.
- Hassle-free playback thanks to decoding support in web browsers, operating systems, and mobile devices.
“AV1 allows for attractive bitrate and extended client compatibility. It’s really a win for the industry. The keywords are ‘easy access’ and ‘open.’”
Johan Paulsson, Chief Technology Officer at Axis Communications
AV1 is perfect for cloud solutions
AV1 is supported in major cloud frameworks, making it the top choice for cloud-based decoding. Its adoption in network cameras simplifies surveillance solutions and makes integration and deployment more straightforward. AV1 makes it easier to bridge between applications and bring hybrid solutions to the market. Plus, standardized cloud technologies, like WebRTC, already use AV1, further streamlining the process.
AV1 for business intelligence and operational efficiency
By providing high-quality video at lower bandwidths and easily integrating with other IT systems, AV1 provides an ideal foundation for business intelligence and operational efficiency. What’s more, this encoding standard can integrate seamlessly with other IT systems, such as logistic systems, building management systems, and resource planning systems.
