What is fully automatic adjustment?

Every Axis camera is engineered to run in fully automatic mode. Each critical parameter adjusts to maintain image usability – automatically and flawlessly – every time conditions change.

Why is fully automatic adjustment important?

Excellent image usability is essential to users getting what they need from their surveillance system. In real surveillance environments, conditions change all the time. So, without fully automatic adjustment, perfect image usability won’t be perfect for long. Imagine the cost and the inconvenience of reconfiguring every camera every time the light changes? Not to mention the cost of making bad decisions and depending on poorly functioning analytics due to constantly compromised image usability.

The Axis advantage

The only way we can ensure fully automatic adjustment is to physically test every critical parameter that can affect image usability in the field. Our testing protocol is unrivaled. We expose every device prototype to every imaginable condition and check that it continues to perform as well as it did when it was configured under controlled conditions. When we discover something that’s not perfect, we adjust the algorithms. And then test repeatedly until we’re completely confident that everyone can always count on fully automatic adjustment.

Hit the road, Jack!

The real test of a new Axis camera? When the rubber hits the road. Literally. Because it’s the job of our image engineers to make sure every image every Axis camera captures, under any condition, is as usable as the last one. And the next, and the one after that. That the camera adjusts fully automatically to a new set of circumstance every time. So as soon as a new prototype is ready, we load it into a test car to see how it handles the curves.

Comprehensive testing

We physically test a long list of critical parametersunder as many different conditions as we possibly can: We might take the prototype into the deepest, darkest part of the Swedish forest to check its performance in low, low light. We test it under flickering city lights, in bright sunshine, in rain, wind, snow and in motion. Then it’s back to the lab to tweak the algorithms before we take the camera out again for another spin.

24/7 Reliability

Any manual adjustment needed is a showstopper. It would be costly – or cost-prohibitive – at best. At worst, users might never notice the problem and end up not getting what they need from their camera. We’re confident that every Axis camera delivers excellent image usability 24/7, 365 days a year. Why? Because we test rigorously so you can count on your cameras adjusting to any imaginable condition completely automatically every time.
