Quality assurance (QA) plays a pivotal role in creating success for Axis and our customers. But what does a career in this crucial function look like? Johan Andersson and Anki Dobrea Gustafsson, two experienced Axis engineers, share their insights.
At its core, QA is about testing new features, identifying defects, and ensuring that customers receive safe and reliable products. But it’s also about careful planning, out-of-the-box thinking, and being able to solve complex challenges. So, what’s an average day for a QA professional at Axis? Anki explains: “One thing is certain, no two days are the same. It is a continuous learning journey, which keeps me motivated and enthusiastic. I have the freedom to make decisions and lots of possibilities for personal development. Another aspect, equally important, is team spirit. In the QA department, the Axis ‘act as one’ principle creates a strong feeling of belonging, and we have a lot of fun!”
Johan shares a similar perspective. “We’re given a lot of responsibility, but there’s also a great deal of trust and freedom to manage our work the way we see fit,” he says. “It’s not a job where you’re stuck behind a desk all day. There are constant interactions and collaboration with colleagues from different departments across the company.”
A career in QA at Axis is just the beginning of many opportunities. “I started as a junior and continued as a test lead, which gave me a deep and broad understanding of our products,” says Anki. “Then, I was ready to take the challenge of specializing in a specific test area. Many opportunities are available on the road; you just need to grab the one that suits you.” Johan echoes this sentiment. “One of the things I love most about my role is working with cutting-edge technologies. I’m always learning about the latest innovations.”
Axis invests in the continuous development of its QA team, offering training programs, mentorship, and even cross-departmental exchanges. It’s all designed to help our team members grow and advance their careers and for us to provide the best products to our customers.
QA isn’t without its challenges, but that is also what makes it so fulfilling and creates a strong culture of innovation. Johan explains, “We encourage people to try new things, even if it means learning through failure. It’s about having the courage to try.” Anki adds, “QA needs to constantly adapt and reshape the test strategy for new technologies and platforms that are getting more and more complex every day. That is both challenging and interesting at the same time.”
At Axis, overcoming challenges isn’t something you do alone. Our workplace culture is built on the principle of working together to solve problems. “QA is one of the areas where teamwork really shines,” says Anki. “You’re always collaborating with others, whether it’s with developers to influence the product design or with other project stakeholders to understand the product scope of application better.”
So, what makes someone a great QA professional at Axis? According to Anki and Johan, it’s all about collaboration, attention to detail, strong analytical skills and thinking and acting like a customer.
