Benefits of an i-CS lens
Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS)
To stabilize the image, the camera reads certain information from the lens. The illustration below shows the controls for EIS in the graphical user interface (GUI) of the camera when not using an i-CS lens. For EIS to work properly, it is important that the focal length of the lens be correctly set, which can be tricky.
A camera with an i-CS lens however, eliminates the need for manual setting, as it can read the focal length directly from the lens. Fewer settings are required in this case.
Barrel distortion correction
As there is no such thing as a perfect lens, each lens will present some form of aberration or defect due to various limitations. These aberrations include barrel distortion, in which the image of a square object has sides that curve out. Since the i-CS lens contains information about its own geometrical distortion, the camera can use this information to correct the distortion.
