Network cameras and video servers from the global leader in network video,
Axis Communications1, have been installed by Zerodegrees, the
expanding microbrewery and restaurant chain2, at its Bristol-based
restaurant. A total of 16 Axis network cameras, two Axis video servers and
Milestone XProtect software have been deployed at the restaurant. The discreet
surveillance solution, has already achieved return on investment (ROI) following
the theft of a significant amount of money which was captured on two of the new
Axis cameras. All monies stolen have since been paid back to Zerodegrees.
Zerodegrees has installed four AXIS 211 Power over Ethernet (PoE) Network
Cameras, three AXIS 205 Network Cameras, six AXIS 2110 Network Cameras, one AXIS
207W in place and a further two AXIS 207W’s planned. In addition, two AXIS 241Q
Video Servers have been used to digitise output from four existing
analogue-based cameras. The company also chose to deploy Milestone XProtect to
manage and store the video output from a total of 20 cameras for a 31-day
period. The flexibility and ease-of-use meant that the system was installed by
Zerodegrees co-founder, Mr Nick Desai.
Desai always considered that discrete deployment of surveillance cameras would
act as an important deterrent against bad behaviour in his nightclubs and bars:
“Many nightclubs employ strong arm tactics at the door to keep undesirables out.
We decided to go down the technology route to deter bad behaviour because, in
principle, we wanted to be welcoming to everyone. We needed high-quality video
across most of the site - particularly in doorways, the stock room and covering
the safes, bars and waitress stations.”
The restaurant saw a return on its investment very quickly following an incident
of theft in 2004 when a member of staff stole the takings from a busy Friday
night’s trading. However, the evidence was caught on two separate Axis cameras
and the member of staff was later successfully prosecuted and ordered to repay
the full amount or face a jail sentence.
Desai summarised:
“This incident alone effectively proved the value of the system in terms of
return on investment. And we have had others incidents including the accidental
breaking of a reinforced plate glass and Zerodegrees-branded door which we
caught on camera and, as a result, the insurance claims process proved much
faster.”
Zerodegrees is also planning to integrate the Axis network cameras with
Milestone XProtect Transact software to provide automated monitoring of cash
handling at all tills, allowing managers to assess whether any discrepancies
between takings and cash register receipts are due to genuine wrong-doing or
simply mistakes in the delivery of change and collection of tips.
Steve Gorski, managing director of Axis Communications UK Ltd, commented:
“This installation is an excellent example of the effectiveness and flexibility
of IP-Surveillance. This technology continues to gain pace in the security
market and it is rewarding to see Zerodegrees make such an immediate return on
investment from it. The cameras have provided a valuable management tool as well
as a high-quality surveillance system for the group.”
Nick Desai summed up:
“We are impressed with the quality of the Axis cameras and the use of Power over
Ethernet cameras made these easier to install. The flexibility of this
technology means that we are now seriously considering integrating the system in
the future with our cash tills as well offering people planning to hire or visit
one of our restaurants, the option of checking out our premises first via the
internet using a PTZ camera.”

2 The Zerodegrees Concept offers a microbrewery and restaurant under one roof.
The name Zerodegrees stemmed from the location of the group’s base in Blackheath
just to the East of Greenwich on the Meridian line at Zerodegrees (00). The
restaurant offers fresh food that is specifically chosen to complement a full
range of up to six fresh beers being brewed on site. There is also a focus on
natural ingredients so the brewing process contains no artificial chemicals or
colourings. The interior of the restaurants have a slick, modern and stylish
feel to accentuate the novelty of the concept.
The Bristol restaurant was bought in July 2002. It is a 12,500 square foot site
which used to be an old tram works close to the heart of Bristol. This site
caters for 180 covers inside, with an outdoor terrace space for an additional
50. It was opened in July 2004 and was an immediate success. Today four to five
thousand litres of beer are consumed weekly on the premises.

About Zerodegrees
The name Zerodegrees comes from the family’s first microbrewery location in
Blackheath, which is very close to the British Meridian zero degree line next to
Greenwich. The beers are actually stored and served at two degrees Celsius, but
it has ‘Zero Additives, Zero Preservatives, Zero Filters and Zero Pasteurizers’!
Zerodegrees is proud to be part of the emerging popularity of fresh beers brewed
by microbreweries. British beer drinkers are realising that there is a world of
beer to explore. It is not just the variety that is important: freshness,
quality and flavour are what differentiate Zerodegrees from that of the filtered
and pasteurised beer of the big industrial breweries. The yeast is left alive in
Zerodegrees beer, to mature and compliment the beverage flavour. Also, they do
not add any artificial colouring or sweeteners to the beer. Their own brew
master works hard to keep up with the demands of thirsty customers. Information
about Zerodegrees can be found at
www.zerodegrees.co.uk.
