Axis introduces world’s smallest MPEG-4 network camera
Axis Communications, the global leader in the network video market, launched today the AXIS 207 Network Camera a true bandwidth-efficient network camera that utilises MPEG-4 image compression to provide the best image quality of any camera in its class. At about the size of a deck of cards (approximately 2 x 1 x 3 inches), the AXIS 207 is the world’s smallest MPEG-4 network camera. It is designed for indoor surveillance and remote monitoring applications and is ideal for securing small businesses, home offices and residences.
Unlike Web cameras, the AXIS 207 operates independently of a PC and contains a built-in Web server. This enables users to access live images from anywhere in the world via the Internet. The camera provides full-motion video (up to 30 frames a second) using MPEG-4 compression or Motion JPEG video streaming.
The network camera offers a built-in ActiveX media player and uses mobile standards such as 3GPP and ISMA to enable mobile monitoring via a range of web browser software including Realtime Player, QuickTime, MPlayer and PacketVideo. It also supports Mac OSX 10.4 (Tiger), the Apple Safari web browser with QuickTime and Bonjour for simplified Macintosh installations.
The AXIS 207 Network Camera also has a built-in microphone for audio detection. The new high quality, mobile-friendly compression algorithm (MPEG-4 AAC) is co-developed by the Fraunhofer Institute. It enables users to view motion and hear synchronised sound at up to 30 frames per second wherever they are. An Input/Output port at the back of the camera also enables remote control of locks, doors and alarms. The AXIS 207 comes with a high-quality progressive scan CMOS image sensor to provide excellent images in lighting conditions as low as one lux. It is also possible to compress video using MJPEG and MPEG-4 simultaneously from the AXIS 207.
The AXIS 207 has the added advantage of being the smallest available on the market to offer these advanced features. At approximately two by one by three inches (the size of a pack of playing cards) and attachable using a small G clamp it is ideal for those that do not want to (or are not allowed to) fix the camera onto a wall or ceiling.
“The AXIS 207 provides the highest quality video of any network camera designed specifically for entry-level users,” said Dominic Bruning, managing director of Axis Communications (UK) Limited, summed up the latest camera:
“Security and surveillance has become increasingly important to small businesses, home offices and residences, and Axis is meeting this market’s needs by offering a high quality camera at an affordable price.”
This AXIS 207 Network Camera will cost £209 + VAT and will be available from the beginning of August 2005 through Axis’ distribution channels. For authorised distributors please go to a list at: http://www.axis.com/sales/index.php .
This product launch coincides with a number of price reductions from Axis. The AXIS 206 Network Camera has recently been reduced from a recommended retail price of £174to £139 and the 206W wireless network camera has also been decreased from £209 to £174 .
