Solving Problems - Answers

Coax

Hardware

System Installation

Problem Symptoms:

  • Contact can not be established with system
  • Interface is loosing contact with system
    Solution
  • Check the coax cabling
  • Make sure that the port has been defined as a printer port
  • Make sure that the protocol used is Coax type A. Coax type is not supported. Be especially careful with 43xx and 47xx hosts. Sometimes they are connected to IBM 3263 model 1 printer and this protocol is not supported by Axis interfaces. Please contact your dealer or distributor.

Terminal Setup

The Terminal Set-up does not come up on the Screen

  • Check the cable between the interface and the screen.
  • Make sure that the interface supports the Terminal Set Up feature. Some inbuilt interfaces have a printer set-up instead
  • Make sure that the screen you use does not have a feature called "Keyboard Buffering" turned on. This might cause the set-up to get stuck in the "Define Keys" menu.
  • Using a 3472 in DFT mode will not work. You have to run the screen in CUT-mode.

Software

Problems when installing the interface

Problem Symptoms:

  • Interface looses contact with system
  • Control Unit Hangs (in very rare cases)

Solution:

  • Check that your control unit can handle extended attributes (EAB) and APL, if not, set parameter for APL table (#124) in the interface to 0.

Problems during operation

Paper Positioning problems:

Check that the page length in the printed document corresponds to the page length selected in the system and to the page length set in the interface. If you have problems getting the correct page length, make an EBCDIC Hex dump of a document that covers the whole page and count the linefeeds that are sent from the system. This will give you the correct page length setting.

Here are some usual Page lengths:

Name Length in inches Length in lines at 6 Lpi
8" 48
B5 10 1/8" 60
Executive 10 1/2" 63
US Letter 11" 66
A4 11 2/3" 70
12" 72
US Legal 14" 84

NOTE: On most Laser printers you have a top and bottom margin of one line each, which means that you canprint 2 lines less than mentioned above. Note that the size of the margin may vary from printer to printer.

Incorrect line lengths or words wrapping:

  • Check that the correct line length is set.
  • Consult the users manual for IBM RPQ:s. There might be different RPQ settings that have to be made.

Nationality specific characters are not printed correctly:

  • Set the printer connected to the same ASCII language as the interface or set both the printer and the interface to your national ASCII language.
  • Characters like ÄÅÖäåö are printed as AAOaao. Make sure that you use the same ASCII Nationality as set in the printer.
  • Characters like ÄÅÖäåö are printed as []\{}|. Make sure that you have chosen the same SCS Nationality as the system.
  • Sometimes International #500 is used instead of your country's code page.

CECP Characters are not printed in LU-3 mode:

  • Use the IBM 4224 printer emulation. CECP characters can only be printed in LU-1 if any other emulation is selected.

Underline and Bold problems:

  • Underline and bold are printed as: Underline____ and BOLD textBOLD text

Check that the printer has CR support turned ON. Also check that the parameter for MPP (Maximum print position) is not set to 0. If it is, the Interface will not send any CR:s to the printer.

Other Problems

Problems when using the Cobra or Cobra+ interfaces without a power supply:

  • The Cobra and Cobra+ are designed to work with a printer that can supply 5v on pin 18 on the parallel connector. When entering the terminal set-up and executing a test function that makes the printer print, the printer uses more power. In some there is not enough power to let the printer print and supply the Cobra at the same time. This can make the Cobra reset itself, and can be seen as if the terminal set-up is 'hanging'.
  • To get around this problem, just connect a power supply to the Cobra interface.

This problem can mainly be seen with the new Cobra+ interface, since it uses more power than the Cobra. Printers that are affected by this problem are: OKI 320, 321, 390, 391, 393 and Facit P6060. Probably there are some more models.

Connecting a PC to the PC-Host port

Problem Symptoms:

  • Printer is not responding when printing from the PC
  • Printer is printing Garbage

Solution:

  • Check the parameter "PC-Host Timeout"in the interface, it should be greater than 0, a value of 10 is recommended.
  • If you use a program package like Windows, please make sure that the settings inside the program are correct. Windows overrides the settings made in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file in your PC.

Incorrect characters are printed when printing from the PC:

  • Use the PC-Host and the Host-PC strings to switch between the different character sets used. Program the Host-PC string so that it sets the printer to PC Set 850 or PC Set II (code page 437) and the PC-Host string so that the original character set is used.

Twinax

Hardware

Problems when installing the interface

Problem Symptoms:

  • Interface is not communicating with the system.
  • Interface is loosing contact with the system.
  • Other equipment is thrown off the system.

Solution:

  • Check the cabling after defective cables.
  • Check that the last unit in the line has a terminator mounted or that the terminating switch is in position 1 or
    that a self-terminating T-cable is mounted.
  • Make sure that IBM approved cables or cabling system and patch boxes have been used. Patch boxes like the TI-EX may distort the signal so much, that no equipment can get
    connection with the system.
  • Make sure that you have set the correct device address.

  • See chapter "Problems when installing the Interface"

Problems when upgrading from S/3x to AS/400

Some old products were designed and built before the AS/400 came. Therefore the AS/400 is not supported in old software releases. Please check that you have the latest firmware for your interface.

Problems with Terminal Setup

The Terminal Set-up is not coming up on the Screen:

  • Check that the Cables are OK and correctly connected.
  • The cables should be terminated in both ends. The Cobra and AFP interfaces are provided with self-terminating T-Bar connectors.
  • Make sure that the screen is set to a valid device address.

Software

Problems when installing the interface

When you install a 3812/5219 emulating interface like the AX-3 Cobra 5219 you should always do the configuration on the system as if you had an IBM 3812 printer.

The Interface is loosing contact with the Host:

  • Some IBM terminals, like the 3477, have two or more device addresses used for the terminal itself and the rest for printer ports on the terminal.
  • Make sure that the interface does not have the same device address as any of these addresses or as any other device on the same loop.
  • Make sure that the configuration of the interface match with the configuration in the system; i.e. if the interface is set for 4214 the system configuration should also say 4214.

5219 Specific problems

The font selected is not printed:

  • Make sure that the FGID you selected is correctly defined in the parameter list.
  • Not all fonts mentioned in the manual can be reached without reprogramming the parameter list. You may have to install a font cartridge and reprogram the parameter list to get the desired fonts. Check the users manual for a description of how to program your own font definitions.
