WINS

Search

Note that WINS is supported by StorPoint from
version 4.12 !

This is how WINS works

To be able to use the cd server on another TCP/IP segment with Netbios over TCP/IP (NBT) You need a WINS server started on a NT server.  In the TCP/IP configuration on the client you enter the IP address  of the NT-Server who is running the WINS-server

  1. The client sends it's IP address and Netbios name to the WINS service.

  2. When another workstation wants to map a computer it tries  to find it in this way.

  3. Check if the computer name and it's IP address is already know.

  4. Broadcast on it's own IP segment.

  5. Asks the WINS server (The best solution)

  6. Look in the LMHOST file (Could be local or at a server) In NT  it's possible to turn this of.

  7. Look in DNS server. (Doesn't always work) In NT it's possible to turn this off.

As this is not possible on the cd server you must add the name and ip address manually in the WINS administration program. Be sure to use the same name and IP address in the CONFIG.INI file of the cd server and the WINS server.

In future releases of the StorPoint it will be possible to use WINS.

Browsing

The browsing is taken care of by a browse master, and that is automatically elected on the network. If the browse master knows all names in the network it does not automatically mean that another computer can map to all computers that it can list from the browse master. You also need to resolve the IP address and that is not a task for the browsemaster.

If there is a NT- machine in the segment, this will become the browsemaster, otherwise wfw or w95 will be.
