Microsoft NW client for NT and StorPoint 4.20 or later

Q: When using Microsoft NetWare Client for NT I cannot see any files on any CD-ROM when accessing the CD-ROM through the CD folder

A: In firmware revision 4.20 and on this will not work with this client. You have to access the CD-ROM through the exported CD volume name instead.  See below for notes about setting access rights to volumes.

Technical description:

The Microsoft NetWare client has a limitation that makes it unable to detect a new volume number when accessing a new directory. Since the CD-ROM:s are indeed different volumes, the Microsoft NetWare Client is unable to send the correct command to browse the directory.

If you map the CD-ROM directly through it's volume name, you'll be able to access it. The reason why this has changed is that we wanted to improve speed and reliability for the Novell Client 32 and IntranetWare Clients. With the new implementation you no longer get the 'Client 32 is unable to reconnect to server XXXXX'. Also, directory browsing for both Novell and Micosoft clients has been speeded up tremendously.

Managing access rights on StorPoint (NDS)

The access rights are set as before we introduced the feature with CD-ROM volume export. CD-folder access rights are inherited from the root of the SYS volume and individual CD-ROM rights are inherited from the CD-folder. The exported CD-ROM volumes have the exact same rights as the same CD-ROM accessed from the CD-folder.

When managing rights using NWAdmin, you do that through the SYS volume and set the rights on the CD-ROM:s you see in the CD-folder. There are a few advantages with this:

  1. You have only _one_ way to set access rights to each CD-ROM.

  2. It is easier to restrict access to all CD:s since you can set restrictions on the CD-folder. If exported CD-ROM:s had had their own access rights, you would have to restrict access to each and every CD-ROM you insert into the StorPoint.

  3. Newly inserted CD-ROM:s inherit their rights from the CD-folder, so they  have the same default rights as your other CD-ROM:s.

  4. You don't have to create volume objects in the tree for each volume you wish to set access rights on.
