Behind a firewall or on a NAT network

Summary: This article explains how to use the Axis network video product behind a firewall or a broadband router.

The information in this article applies to all Axis network cameras and video servers.

Description

If the Axis network camera is located on a network behind a firewall or a broadband router, you may still have live images on your Web.

The easiest and best solution is to set up a "bypass tunnel" through the broadband router or firewall. This is simply a mapping of a TCP port on the router or firewall to port 80 (http) on the Axis network video product. Please consult your firewall or broadband router's manual.

If the port mapping method is unavailable we recommend that you buffer the images on a standard Web server.

Configure the Axis network camera to deliver images sequentially to an FTP server that is available on the Internet as well as behind your firewall (if applicable to your product). You do this by using Event Configuration pages in the product's web interface.

If you want your viewers to have live updated images, you can use the same methods described in the "Live video on a high hit rate site" example or if you only want updated snapshots, take a look at the "Live Snapshots" example and create similar page for accessing snapshots on your FTP server.

Important: Axis does not take any responsibility for how these configuration changes may affect your system. If the modification fails or if you get other unexpected results, you may have to restore the factory default settings as described in the User’s Manual.
