Audio Modes

Four different audio modes are possible: full duplex, half duplex, simplex (talk) and simplex (listen).

Full duplex - Talk and listen simultaneously

Full-duplex mode means that you can transmit and receive audio at the same time, without having to use any of the controls. This is just like having a telephone conversation. The only controls you may wish to use are the mute checkboxes to turn off the sound, and the volume controls to adjust the input/output levels.

Note that only the first connecting client will be able to send audio as well as receive video and audio. Up to 9 connecting clients will be able to receive audio and video. If your application requires audio to be sent from more than one PC client, consider using half-duplex mode instead.

Important!

  • This mode requires a full-duplex sound card on your computer, which is standard on modern PCs
  • The bandwidth limitations on your local network will restrict the number simultaneous audio-visual client connections that can be maintained without degradation of the audio-visual quality. If your available bandwidth is 0.2Mbit/s or less, it is recommended that you use half-duplex mode instead.

Half duplex - Talk and listen

Half-duplex mode sends and receives audio in both directions, but only in one direction at a time. This means you must actively transmit with the help of the Push-to-Talk button. Note that the Push-to-Talk button can be configured for use in two different ways - Toggle or Instant. This is set in the network camera’s admin tools.

To enable the non-talking clients to listen, a special setting is available for re-distributing the audio stream from one client to another. This setting can prove particularly useful where single speaker control is desirable.

Half duplex mode is applicable for remote meeting and remote monitoring applications— such as entrance systems and remote guidance scenarios.

Simplex -Talk to the module

Simplex (talk) mode means that only the web-client end of the connection can transmit audio (that is, to the audio module). This could be used, for example, to provide spoken instructions to a person seen in the network camera. This mode also requires you to use the Push-to-Talk button.

Simplex - Listen to the module

Simplex (listen) mode can only receive audio from the audio module to the Web client. This can be used in remote monitoring and Web attraction applications to provide live audio, as well as video, of a monitored situation. Up to 10 simultaneous clients are possible.
