Despite its semi-rural Oregon location, Lebanon High School and its nearly 1,400 students were experiencing many of the problems usually associated with inner-city schools. In an effort to curb detrimental behavior and provide a better learning environment, leadership downsized the school by dividing it up into four close-knit academies. To do this required a number of renovations to campus buildings, prompting the implementation of additional security measures including a network-based surveillance system.
To improve safety inside buildings and around campus grounds, the school decided to install twenty-five Axis network cameras plus a few video servers handling analog cameras, all wired into an existing high-speed data network. School personnel were authorized to access all or parts of the system, allowing them to view selected video via any web browser on demand, even from other locations. Because the video data recorded is digital, personnel could easily pull up clips according to camera location, date and time, as well as share the clips with law enforcement if needed.
The combination of creating smaller, more cohesive environments and installing an IP-Surveillance system has enabled Lebanon High School to evolve into a more inviting place to learn. Seventy arrests in one year attest to the system’s efficiency in helping to place guilty parties at the scene and time of incident, further supporting student accountability.
