Mission

Every year, hundreds of thousands of visitors flood the streets of Savannah, GA to observe the nation’s second largest St. Patrick’s Day parade. To aid police and other emergency personnel in an effort to increase public safety during the celebration, the City of Savannah decided to install a temporary IP-Surveillance system. With little time remaining and a challenging topography that extended from riverfront areas into a maze of side streets, officials knew they needed something other than a conventional wired IP solution.

Solution

NetMethods, a Louisiana-based systems integrator, together with Tropos Networks, provided the answers to Savannah’s needs – a wireless broadband mesh network. Working under a very tight time frame, Tropos quickly set up one of its MetroMesh networks and NetMethods oversaw the installation of centralized video management software in combination with Axis network cameras featuring day/night and pan/tilt/zoom (PTZ) functionality.Various types of cameras were used including the AXIS 221 fixed-view and AXIS 232D dome cameras.

Result

In choosing a broadband mesh network Savannah was able to avoid the costly and highly time-consuming job of installing cables throughout parts of the city for a wired network. This solution also offered the city greater flexibility and scalability, leading them to turn what started out as a quick, temporary solution into a permanent part of city surveillance efforts that can be expanded as needed.
