Northside ISD selects scalable IP solution for safer schools

Over 1,000 Axis network cameras installed by one of Texas’ largest school districts

Mission

Northside Independent School District of San Antonio, Texas, is one of the state’s largest public school districts and encompasses over 80 schools. With growing concern for the safety of students and staff, citizens voted to approve the district’s plan to replace disparate and inadequate legacy surveillance systems with a centralized and scalable IP-based solution.

Solution

Northside ISD chose a comprehensive solution from LenSec, an industry leader in highly scalable and web-based surveillance solutions. LenSec helped the school district develop a systematic approach for testing, evaluating and implementing a district wide solution involving over 1,000 Axis network cameras, 20 servers and monitoring software for centralized video management.

Each of the servers installed at selected schools handle as many as 65 cameras. Taking advantage of the city’s robust, fiber-optic Gigabit Metro Area Network, they feed video back to a central security office, and even to the local police when necessary. This infrastructure makes it very easy to add new cameras to meet growing needs in the future.

Result

Today Northside ISD has a much more consistent and functional surveillance system in place to provide security for thousands of students and staff, as well as to monitor facilities and property. As a result, discipline issues have been reduced at high schools, and taxpayers are considering expanding the system to include more schools throughout the district.
