Department of Juvenile Justice puts tough demands on new IP surveillance system

Mission

The Kentucky Department of Juvenile Justice operates 30 facilities around the state for ensuring the custody, safety and treatment of the youth entrusted to them by the judicial system. When they decided to replace their ageing analog surveillance system, the ability to store large volumes of video, and to be able to access this critical data quickly and easily in any emergency, were among their highest priorities.

Solution

After careful research, the Kentucky DJJ decided that an open enterprise platform for IP-based surveillance was their best bet for long-term scalability. They chose EMC Corporation, a market leader in the field of advanced data storage systems, to deliver a turnkey surveillance and data storage solution.

Servers, cameras, a large capacity storage array and analysis and management software were all part of the solution. Included in the delivery were hundreds of Axis network cameras, including dome, fixed and pan/tilt/zoom (PTZ). In some cases, Axis video encoders were installed to digitize video from existing analog cameras, incorporating them into the IP network.

Result

Besides improving security, the IP-Surveillance system also captured incident accountability and showed youth and staff in positive situations. By choosing a partner with leading-edge knowledge in the field of data storage, the DJJ also succeeded in meeting the project’s top priorities through scalable storage arrays and state-of-the-art search engine technology.
