Edge storage

Literature

Solution concept:
pdf Edge storage

Edge storage is a concept in Axis network cameras and video encoders that allow them to record video directly to a storage device such as an SD-card. It is sometimes referred to as local storage or onboard recording.

Edge storage brings new possibilities to design flexible and reliable recording solutions:

  • Increased system reliability
  • High quality video in low bandwidth installations
  • Recording for remote and mobile surveillance
  • Integration with leading VMS and AXIS Camera Station

When integrated with video management software (VMS), edge storage helps create more robust and flexible video surveillance systems for mission-critical installations, remote locations, or mobile situations.

Onsite system redundancy

Fail-over recording

Fail-over recording means that images can be temporarily stored in the network camera in case of network failure. The functionality provides increased system reliability and safeguards system operation.

If a network failure occurs, the video stream from the camera will be stored on the camera’s SD/SDHC card. When the network connection is restored and the system returns to normal operation, central VMS can retrieve and merge local video recordings seamlessly. This ensures that the user gets uninterrupted video recordings.

Storage estimates

In a typical scenario (see Table 1), the cameras are programmed to record to the onsite device at different frame rates and resolutions depending on motion detection, alarm events, certain hours of the day, and if the network connection is lost.
