Commonly Asked Questions About the AXIS 7000:

Q: Why do I want to network my digital copier instead of having it as a standalone device?
A:
Sharing any resource - especially digital copiers - means you can buy fewer, yet higher quality devices, to meet the needs of the workgroup or department. You can compare this to purchasing a networked printer for office use, instead of purchasing desktop printers for everyone.

2. Why would I use a networked digital copier?
A:
With a networked digital copier and the AXIS 7000, a company can use one common platform - e-mail - for all their document sharing needs. All documents can be instantly digitized and then archived, forwarded, or edited right at your desktop. Furthermore, the AXIS 7000 significantly reduces your costs by eliminating the need for faxing and overnight mail. Most companies fax documents to locations within their own company. The average phone bill for a fax machine can range anywhere from $200 and over - per month. If you have e-mail, the same document can be e-mailed directly to an individual or a group for free.

How easy is it to use?
A:
Very!

  • Place the document on the digital copier.
  • Select the e-mail address or file destination.
  • Press send.

The documents are converted to TIFF, PCL, JPEG, or PDF formats and sent as files or e-mail attachments.

Q: How much training do I need?
A:
The AXIS 7000 was designed to be very intuitive. Users who know how to use e-mail or a Web-browser are already trained on viewing documents sent by the AXIS 7000. In addition, the AXIS 7000 User's Guide explains how to use this product in detail.

Can I send a document to multiple destinations?
A:
Yes, you can select multiple destinations and also choose a destination profile via the user interface.

Can I send to a fax machine?
A:
Today the AXIS 7000 can send to a fax machine via a fax server. However, send-to-e-mail can replace the use of the fax machine, because the AXIS 7000 sends documents with more reliability and higher quality than traditional fax machines.

Which Web browsers does the AXIS 7000 support?
A:
The AXIS 7000 supports the following:

  • Netscape 4.0 and higher
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 and higher
  • Also other HTTP 1.0+ or HTML 3.0+ compatible browsers

Q: How am I notified that my image reached its destination?
A:
The user interface on the AXIS 7000 provides a message, indicating that the document has been sent. In addition, you can send the image to your own e-mail address and then forward it to your recipient(s), using your e-mail's receipt notification.

Q: How big is the AXIS 7000?
A:
The AXIS 7000 is about half the size of a 8.5" x 11" sheet of paper or about 8" x 5" x 1.5".

Q: Will the AXIS 7000 slow down my digital copier's speed?
A:
The AXIS 7000 has been optimized to support high-speed digital copiers. Scanning speed varies depending on the complexity of the image scanned. Demanding applications should use scanners with built-in compression for optimal performance.

Q: Is there additional hardware I need to use with the AXIS 7000?
A:
For use with a digital copier, the network scanning option of the copier must be installed. Contact your local copier dealer for more information. You will also need a keyboard and a SCSI 2-cable. A keyboard for manually entering e-mail addresses is optional.

Q: Will I need support for the AXIS 7000?
A:
Axis has gone to great lengths to make the AXIS 7000 intuitive for any user. A three-year warranty and free technical support further secures your investment.

Q: How are software upgrades performed?
A:
Upgrades are available on Axis' Web page. The software is downloaded over the network via FTP to your specific AXIS 7000 device.

Q: What kind of network do I need to operate the AXIS 7000?
A:
A 10 or 100 MB Ethernet network that runs TCP/IP; A Web-browser is used for administration and optionally for scanning; and SMTP and FTP are used for transferring the image.

Q: What can I do about the security of the AXIS 7000?
A:
NT and LDAP user authentication was added to the AXIS 7000 to make the device more secure. Furthermore, you can place the server behind a firewall to prevent access to the device from outside the organization. A password can also be activated to prevent anyone from making configuration changes. The list of possible destinations is fully controllable (and password protected), which limits possible abuse or security issues.

Q: Do I need a dedicated server or a specific Network Operating System?
A:
The AXIS 7000 is file-server independent. The use of standard Internet protocols allows you to send documents via e-mail, to a file server, directly to the desktop, or to view the documents with a standard Web-browser.

Q: Can I use OCR to edit scanned images?
A:
You can use a variety of programs that perform OCR, however, our product does not do OCR. We transfer an image in the proper format to your desktop application in order to convert that image to usable text.

Q: What is FLASH upgrade?
A:
All AXIS 7000's are shipped with FLASH-upgrade capability. Administrators download new software updates off the Internet and "flash" their AXIS 7000 with new software upgrades. Axis retains all parameter settings after an upgrade of the device.

What is AXIS ThinWizard?
A:
AXIS ThinWizard is a major step forward in the management of all Axis' ThinServerâ„¢ products. A Web-based device management tool built using Javaâ„¢ technology, AXIS ThinWizard allows multiple ThinServer products to be viewed and managed in a group or groups using a standard Web browser. In addition, the Axis ThinWizard features many advantages over traditional device management software including:

  • Automatic discovery of all Axis products on an IP network
  • Flexible grouping of Axis products for viewing and managing as an entity
  • Immediate viewing of status updates for Axis products in the network
  • Easy-to-use upgrade Wizard for group firmware updates

Q: When sending a document, what image format is used?
A:
The AXIS 7000 can send images as TIFF, JPEG, PDF, and PCL attachments. TIFF is typically used for text documents and JPEG is usually used for photographs and other graphics. PDF is used for Adobe specific programs and PCL is used for the send-to-print functionality.
