AXIS 1650 - Q&As

Q: What is new with the AXIS 1650 print server compared with the AXIS 1610?
A:
Both print servers are specially designed in cooperation with Canon to support its printer family. The new AXIS 1650--as with its predecessor, the AXIS 1610--supports all Canon printers including host-based. The following functions are inherited from the AXIS 1610:

  • Parallel printer interface
  • 10BaseT/100BaseTX Ethernet
  • CAPT 1.0 support (old host-based printers)
  • Specially adopted print monitor (AXIS 1650 has a new version that seamlessly supports all Canon printers)

In addition, the AXIS 1650 includes:

  • USB printer interface (either USB or parallel at one time)
  • CAPT 2.1 support (newer models of host-based printers)
  • LPR and Raw TCP printing protocols (to support mainly Canon Advanced Raster Printing System and Bubble Jet printers). Fax functions are supported by the AXIS 1650 for MFPs using this technology.
  • TCP printing restriction
  • Detailed status for Canon Bubble Jet printers

Q: What is TCP printing restriction?
A:
Based on the user’s IP address, you can filter out who should be allowed to print or who should be blocked. Using this, you can control access to the printer.

Q: What is CAPT?
A:
Canon Advanced Printing Technology (CAPT) is one of Canon’s implementation of host-based printing technology. Host-based printing utilizes the massive processing power of today’s PCs to do rasterization (converting the picture to lines and dots), making it possible to reduce printer cost while at the same time increase printing speed. The benefit with CAPT is the high level of status information communicated back to the user. The drawback is that these printers need specially designed print servers to handle the specific technology used. The CAPT technology is available in two versions: 1.0 and 2.1; both are supported by the AXIS 1650 print server.

Q: What is Canon Advanced Raster Printing System?
A:
This is another variant of Canon’s host-based printing technology, which utilizes the massive processing power of the PC for rasterization (converting the picture to lines and dots). This technology does not provide a lot of status information to the user and printers using this technology can thus be connected to a standard Axis print server using LPR/LPD or raw TCP/IP printing protocols. The AXIS 1650 is, however, a better-suited and adapted networking solution.

Q: Which printers does the print server support?
A:
The AXIS 1650 is specially designed for Canon printers and supports virtually all of its printers. Note that only Canon-branded printers can be used together with the AXIS 1650.

Q: Which environments does the print server support?
A:
AXIS 1650 focuses on Windows and supports this for all printers. For non-CAPT printers, other environments are supported through LPR and raw TCP/IP where printer drivers for the requested platform are available from Canon.
.
Q: Does the print server support USB 2.0 printers?
A:
Yes, printers following the USB 2.0 specification are backwards compatible with the AXIS 1650. This has been verified for common USB 2.0 printers.

Q: How fast is the USB communication?
A:
The print server communicates according to the USB 2.0 standard in full speed; i.e. 12 Mbps.

Q: How long is the warranty for my print server?
A:
AXIS 1650 has a one-year warranty.

Q: What length of USB cable can be used?
A:
Up to 5 m.

Q: Is a USB cable included?
A:
Yes, since many printers are supplied without a cable.

Q: Can a USB and a parallel printer be connected at the same time?
A:
No, the AXIS 1650 is a single-port print server but with both a USB and a parallel printer interface for customer convenience. It is recommended that you restart the print server if you switch ports.

Q: Which printer drivers do I need to be able to print over USB?
A:
Standard drivers from Canon.

Q: Can I manage my USB print server in the same way as my parallel print server?
A:
Yes.

Q: Are job statistics available?
A:
There is a job log available in the print server Web interface.

Q: Which browsers are supported?
A:
Netscape 4.76 and above. MS IE 4.x and above.

Q: How do I attach the mounting clip?
A:
Use the adhesive tape on the clip and attach it to the center mark of the label. Select a suitable position and attach the second part of the clip with the adhesive tape on the clip, or use a screw. Extra mounting clips can be ordered as accessories (Accessory number 20119).

Q: Where can I buy this print server?
A:
Axis Communications works with local resellers and systems integrators worldwide. On the Axis Web site, you can find a dealer near you. This print server is also available through Canon channels.

Q: How can I be sure that the print server will be able to keep up with future market developments?
A:
Axis offers free firmware upgrades on the Axis Web site. In some cases even new functionality is included.

Q: If I want to flash load a new firmware version to my print server, do I need special software to do so?
A:
No, you can upgrade the firmware via FTP.
