St. Willibrord School created a “Safe & Secure” environment using Axis Camera’s

St. Willibrord College based in Goes in The Netherlands is utilizing Axis Network Camera’s to protect its students and teachers and create a safe environment. One of the main reasons to select the IP-based solution was that the network infrastructure was available and thus saved costs and optimized the investment in the network. The school is a certified Cisco Networking Academy which means that they educate students about the latest network and internet technology. Besides the IP Video Surveillance systems function for security, it also serves as a teaching tool with regards to networking technology.

Safe & Secure Program

The IP Video Surveillance system was installed and delivered by Axis Solution Partner PQR. PQR developed a special program for the Education market called “Safe & Secure”. The main purpose of this program is to provide a total solution specifically designed to create a safe and secure environment for schools. The components of this solution consist of:

  • IP Video Surveillance
This is a customized package allowing schools to protect their schools and properties both inside and outside. The flexibility of the system provides the schools management an ideal tool to keep track of student behaviour and to gather evidence in case of a crime outside school hours.
  • Security against virus and hackers
The “virtual” school needs protection against attacks from hackers and viruses. Schools have invested heavily in ICT technology and it is important they have the tools to protect that investment. These tools are also important to avoid extra costs and improve uptime of the network, servers, and workstations.
  • Internet protection
A school is responsible for the surfing behaviour of its students. Using the latest technology and tools provides schools the ability to control and manage what their students can see. As an extra benefit it also provides protection against spyware and hackers.

Frans Peeters is ICT coordinator at St. Willibrordcollege. Mr Peeters is very enthusiastic about the program. “PQR has designed a great program that is perfectly designed for the needs of schools. The way it is developed gives us the choice to implement all or just parts of the solution. We decided to implement all parts step by step starting with the IP Video Surveillance because of its priority. We immediately experienced results of the video surveillance solution. We could keep track of crimes in the area where student’s bicycles are stored as well as keep track of movement and behaviour in areas where it is hard to have continuous observation by people”.

Mr. Peeters continued: “In that sense it already proved to be a cost effective investment. The total system initially saved us € 11.500 because we didn’t have to invest in a traditional coax based analogue system where a great part of that investment is cabling. The IP Video Surveillance system is running over the existing infrastructure providing us high flexibility and extra functionality compared to the analogue offering. The existing infrastructure is designed to efficiently handle the bandwidth using VLAN technology to separate data traffic on the network”.

PQR initiated this program and works together with vendors whose core competence adds value for schools. The Safe & Secure program is designed in cooperation with Cisco Systems, Axis Communications, Websense and Trend Micro. Additional services such as connection to an alarm central are also part of the program, as schools are interested in a package offering a total solution. Schools are connected to the control room via a secure VPN connection, designed and provided by PQR and based on Cisco Systems network infrastructure.
