Axis network cameras secure students and teachers
at Citycollege St.Fransiscus

Citycollege St. Fransiscus

The Citycollege St. Fransiscus, a catholic comprehensive school in the heart of Rotterdam, recently installed a network camera system from Axis Communications. The network cameras are installed at crucial places in the school: the entrance, the cloakroom, the locker room, the computer-rooms and the cafeteria. The camera system at the Citycollege St. Fransiscus consists of nine Axis 2100 network cameras, Axis Camera Recorder Software and a wireless access point. The cameras are connected to the IP-network, which was already present in the school. For that reason the cabling- and maintenance costs of the camera system were significantly minimized. In case of emergency employees can immediately see what is going on through a secured IP-VPN connection with the school. The wireless access point enables the school staff to place a camera anywhere in the school. This allows locations where several incidents have taken place to be monitored, without the time-consuming task and cost of installing new cables. If permanent monitoring should be necessary in one particular place, the number of cameras can easily be expanded with minimal additional costs.

Loek Montulet, vice-principal of the Citycollege St. Fransiscus: “We already were using several analog cameras, but the image quality wasn’t satisfactory for us. When they needed to be replaced, Axis’ partner Sittyweb Internet Solutions advised us to choose Axis network cameras, because we already had the necessary infrastructure: a network. This was instantly cost-effective. The image quality of the cameras is excellent and we have already confronted several students about their behavior. For instance, thanks to the cameras we were able to address two students who kicked over a dustbin in the cloakroom. Since then the cameras have mainly been used in a preventive way and contribute to the creation of a safe environment for the students.”

Edwin Roobol of Axis: “This project shows us again that working closely with our partners is essential. Our collaboration with Sittyweb Internet Solutions has delivered an IP-based camera system that answers the expectations of the customer. We are convinced that our network cameras contribute to creating a safe environment for the teachers and the students of the Citycollege St. Fransiscus.”

Safe in school

The Citycollege St. Fransiscus is one of the five schools in secondary education that participates in the project ‘Safe in school’. The project group ‘Safe’ is an initiative of the City of Rotterdam. Together with the City Education Service of Rotterdam and the local health service, the project group has developed the safety methodology ‘Safe in school’. On the basis of this methodology an integral safety plan has to be developed for every separate school. The safety methodology originates from the RISC-model. With this model the safety in school environments is monitored systematically from five different domains: the spatial domain (physical security of the school and technical measurements to increase safety); the institutional domain (collaboration between the school and several partners); the social domain (interaction between teachers and students, social bonding and control); the criminology domain (factors that can evoke criminal behavior like weapons, drugs and alcohol); the educational/pedagogical domain (quality of education). The goal of this project is reducing crime and violence through collaboration between schools.
