Depth of field (DOF)

In order to get the best possible result in image quality from your surveillance application, you need to assess the importance of great depth of field.

Examples

 Large images  Large images
Images with different depth of field
Right image offers superior DOF. Lots of light enables a small iris opening. The village is far from the camera and although a wide angle lens is not used, a great result is achieved.

Depth of field at its best will offer clear focused details from a few meters in the foreground and up to hundreds of meters of clear background. DOF is governed by;

  • Iris opening of lens. A small opening maximizes DOF

  • Distance between camera and focusing point. Objects at a distance offer better DOF.

  • Focal length of lens. A wide angle lens offers better DOF compared to a telephoto lens.
