Compression

One important possibility in limiting file sizes, is to compress images. When an image is compressed, it loses some of its original detail. However, as the file size is greatly reduced, lots of storage capacity is gained.

		320x240 pixels  Compression: high File size:  4 KB
		320x240 pixels  Compression: low File size:  30 KB

It is important to differentiate between compression and image resolution, although they both will affect the file size. The number of pixels are changed, when altering the resolution of an image. It affects the physical size of the image. The compression alters the details in patterns, colors and contrast.
