CHUCK ROBERTS, co-anchor:
From the streets of D.C. to the seats of "Minority Report,"
Axis Communications' cameras are covering all the action.
Renay San Miguel has the story.
Renay, hi. Welcome back.
RENAY SAN MIGUEL reporting:
Thank you very much, Chuck, glad to be back.
The new Steven Spielberg movie "Minority Report" is all
about technology and one possible future brought to us by
science, so why shouldn't we talk about it here on Hot
Wired? The movie takes us to the year 2054 when crimes can
be predicted and murderers arrested before they murder.
Tom Cruise plays a future cop who finds himself on the
wrong end of this high-tech future when the system claims
he'll be murdering someone soon. [Excerpts from "Minority
Report"]
"Minority Report" promises to be a summer popcorn movie
that will also make you think about things like free will
vs. destiny, intrusive law enforcement vs. civil rights,
all of it brought about by technology. [Excerpts from
"Minority Report"]
Well, technology can also take you to tonight's world
premier of the movie, which stars Tom Cruise, as you see.
And the company that's making that happen was at the center
of its own big-brother top controversy earlier this year.
You may recall the name Axis Communications from a Hot
Wired story we reported on in February. Axis specializes
in the latest in video surveillance, small state-of-the-art digital cameras that can be linked to the
Internet or an
intranet. And as you can imagine its gear has been much in
demand since September 11th. [Excerpts from "Minority Report"]
The company signed an agreement in February to provide
network surveillance equipment to the Washington DC Police
Department. Key public areas of the nation's capital are
soon to be under watch 24/7 by DC's cops. That raised some
concerns from civil libertarians that we were giving up too
much privacy to protect ourselves from terrorists. But
Axis officials told me that back then that their systems had been in place in England for
awhile and that there were
no problems with any kind of eavesdropping going on there.
Well, now Axis is providing a Popcorn Cam at the massive
Ziegfeld theater in New York City, site of many a major
movie premier. And tonight, beginning at 6:00 PM Eastern
Time, you will be able to go to CountingDown.com and watch
Cruise and company walk down the red carpet. And then
Cruise and the other stars will be brought over to the
Popcorn Cam, if you will, that is in the concession stand
there at the Ziegfeld and you'll be able to chat with them
in real time if you log on and register at CountingDown.com/minorityreport.

So, the latest technology involved in a movie all about technology. That's Hot Wired for this hour.
