Axis’ new intelligent functionality increases effectiveness of unmanned video surveillance

Axis Communications introduces auto-tracking functionality to its top-of-the-line AXIS 233D Network Dome Camera. Auto-tracking will automatically detect a moving person or vehicle and follow it within the camera’s area of coverage. Auto-tracking is particularly beneficial in unmanned video surveillance situations where the occasional presence of people or vehicles requires special attention.

Video surveillance often takes place at times and in areas with little or no activity; for example, at schools and offices after working hours, or at retail stores, hotel corridors and parking garages during nighttime. Such situations usually have an unmanned video surveillance setup with automated recording.

The challenge is in ensuring that when an incident occurs, the right part of a scene is recorded with enough image quality to enable identification. Costs often prohibit the installation of large numbers of cameras or the use of operators to manually control pan/tilt/zoom (PTZ) cameras. Axis’ auto-tracking solves this by enabling a PTZ dome camera to automatically follow an object moving in a scene.
